    Internships and Independent Service Organizations

    1. City Year: Work with a team to provide educational support (tutoring, community projects and encouragement) to at-risk students for a 10 month commitment. In exchange you'll earn a living stipend, a $5,500 AmeriCorps Education Award, health insurance and invaluable leadership experience in the academic setting. Placements in cities across the United States including L.A., San Antonio, New York and New Orleans.

    2. Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture: Placing students in educational internships. Some examples are working with children and families with HIV/AIDS through The Children's Place Association to partnering with the Chicago Park District to offer recreational opportunities or working with drop-in and afterschool programs for teens in underserved communities.     3. Summer Internships (or all year) at Shephard Community Center in Indianapolis, IN. Apply early! Compensation is somewhere around $800. (Kevin Wilder has more info.)
    4. If you are a student of color, consider the renowned charter school network Uncommon School's summer internship which includes a stipend ($3500-5000) and housing. 
    5. Check out Teach For America's list of education opportunities for volunteer or pay
    6. Future Social Studies teachers: Why not see democracy first hand with an internship with the Kansas Governor?  
    7. Interested in an experience abroad? Check out BECA's summer internship in Nicaragua. There's no pay but the experience is excellent. Please note that you have to raise $1,000 to donate to BECA, usually through a church. (Derek Christophel, contact.)
    8. Super competitive internships with the Publishing mammoth, Pearson.
    9. Apply for Memphis Teacher Residency. You make $1000 but more importantly, you get great experience.
    12. Teach at a Connecticut boarding school during the summer. Please note that if you make it to the 2nd round of interviews, you can do a Skype interview if you are out of state. Pay is $3,300 but must complete junior year first.

    ESL Jobs and Opportunities

    1. The Language Company has all kinds of language instructor positions in cities like Orlando, South Bend, and Fort Worth. Check out their job postings to consider for the future. 

    2. The U.S. Embassy in Beijingm, China, has a full page of tips if you are considering teaching English in China. Make sure you read about the kinds of opportunities but also about potential fraud. 

    3. Hey, Phoenicians: Japan has a sister-city teaching opportunity. If you're not from Phoenix, see if your city or town has a sister city with a teacher exchange. 

    4. The Chinese Cultural Center hires English teachers for a variety of lengths and a variety of education backgrounds. Check it out; the pay isn't too shabby.

    Praxis CORE Tips
    Many teacher preparation programs require all students to take the Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST). This test measures basic skills in reading, writing and math. Taking this test in the fall of your sophomore year could help streamline the transfer process. Please check with your schools of interest for more information.

    Mary Miller Library Resources to help you study

    1. PPST study books are available in the Mary Miller Library. They are on reserve under "Introduction to Education."

    2. Use the following instructions to access two PPST sample tests on the Mary Miller Library website:
    -On the library website click on the Reference link
    -Click on the Learning Express Library link
    -Register as a new user (use your HC username and password unless that username is already taken)
    -Click the Occupational Learning Tests link on the left side of the page
    -Locate the Teaching tab. Beneath it you will see the link for Praxis I- Pre-Professional Skills Test. There are two sample tests.

    Thinking about taking a year off to do service? Want to explore education this summer? Check out these websites and resources!

    1. MVS (Mennonite Voluntary Service)
    This Mennonite Church USA year long commitment offers
    volunteer educational opportunities from San Antonio to Washington D.C.

    2. SALT (Serving and Learning Together)
    This Mennonite Church USA year long serving commitment offers in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America/Caribbean and the Middle East.


    3. DOOR Dwell

    1. Work at Ramampo, a camp in New York for children with emotional, social, or learning disabilities. Pay your way there but then your housing and food is covered. Make sure you check out the counselors for the learning centers.
