  • Internships and Independent Service Organizations

    1. City Year: Work with a team to provide educational support (tutoring, community projects and encouragement) to at-risk students for a 10 month commitment. In exchange you'll earn a living stipend, a $5,500 AmeriCorps Education Award, health insurance and invaluable leadership experience in the academic setting. Placements in cities across the United States including L.A., San Antonio, New York and New Orleans.

    2. Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture: Placing students in educational internships. Some examples are working with children and families with HIV/AIDS through The Children's Place Association to partnering with the Chicago Park District to offer recreational opportunities or working with drop-in and afterschool programs for teens in underserved communities.     3. Summer Internships (or all year) at Shephard Community Center in Indianapolis, IN. Apply early! Compensation is somewhere around $800. (Kevin Wilder has more info.)
    4. If you are a student of color, consider the renowned charter school network Uncommon School's summer internship which includes a stipend ($3500-5000) and housing.

    6. Future Social Studies teachers: Why not see democracy first hand with an internship with the Kansas Governor?  
    7. Interested in an experience abroad? Check out BECA's summer internship in Nicaragua. There's no pay but the experience is excellent. Please note that you have to raise $1,000 to donate to BECA, usually through a church. (Derek Christophel, contact.)
    8. Super competitive internships with the Publishing mammoth, Pearson.
    9. Apply for Memphis Teacher Residency. You make $1000 but more importantly, you get great experience.
    12. Teach at a Connecticut boarding school during the summer. Please note that if you make it to the 2nd round of interviews, you can do a Skype interview if you are out of state. Pay is $3,300 but must complete junior year first.
